Developing Technologies in Film and Television Industries
Consumer Products-
Consumer products are available to the general public and are not restricted to the media industry which allows anyone to be able to use this kind of equipment and produce media products even if they are not planning to follow a career or future in media. High advancements are often introduced to the media industry first. Computers are advancing at an incredible rate and the power and efficiency you can buy today, are a lot more powerful than 10 years ago. Computers are advancing as the internal technology is advancing. Both processors and Graphics cards are becoming more and more efficient. However, computers are not the only consumer product that is advancing at a fast rate. Cameras are becoming a lot better as they are beginning to become a lot more compact and can contain a lot more powerful technology which enables it to get the highest quality visuals. Microphones are also becoming more advanced within cameras which may lead to sound recorders becoming obsolete one day or at least having a much easier job. Not only is the equipment that is used to obtain this footage/audio advancing, the software that is used to edit it is too. High level editing technology is becoming easier and easier to obtain by the public and not just exclusive to people in the film and media industry. The Adobe products are currently is currently one of the most popular editing suites available to the public right now. At this moment in time, we are currently capable of non linear editing. However, in the early 2000s linear editing was the only form of editing possible and was referred to as just editing. Linear editing was editing that had to be placed together through chronological order. This gave a predetermined order and did not allow you to arrange clips/footage in a chosen order.

Satellite and Cable-
Satellite companies such as Sky are above ground and are often transmitted from the satellites to the antennas/dish which then goes through to your TV. Satellite is different to cable in the way that satellite is above ground however, satellite can be affected by weather whereas cable cannot. Sky has recently been taken over by Rupert Murdoch who is now taking full control over sky for 11.7 Billion, however, there are many debates into whether Rupert Murdoch has too much control over the media in the United Kingdom. The original bid in 2010 was declined however, the media and news has changed since 2010 and now has digital rivals such as Facebook and Google. There are many news channels across the internet and as the use of the internet has flourished, there has been an increase in internet viewers. This has left newspaper purchases in decline, Cable is usually below the ground and is fed through a cable along the side of a building into the TV. This is a lot more reliable for TV as it cannot be affected by the weather. Cable companies are companies such as BT and Virgin. These companies offer broadband and packages which come with your TV channels.
Analogue and Digital-
The type of TV's that are now available for purchase have changed since the early 2000s. In the early 2000s Digital TV's had not yet been invented and you did not have a choice between analogue and digital, the only option was analogue. Analogue was the first type of TV to be created in 1948. This type of TV was very expensive shortly after its first release and very few people had them. They firstly started off in black and white and later progressed to color. TV's began to become a lot cheaper as technology was advancing through to the 2000s and it became a lot more common to own an analogue TV. When digital TV was invented, analogue slowly became more and more obsolete until the Digital takeover. After this period, analogue TVs suddenly became a lot more affordable. As it stands today, the large majority of people use digital TVs and as advancements such as 3D, 4K and touchscreens have become available, TVs have slowly decreased in price.
Internet-
Internet has becoming increasingly popular, especially as the younger generation are now being brought into a life of technology. The internet is commonly used now for piracy which can lose the box office a lot of money. Piracy is becoming worse as it is becoming easily available to the public over the internet and is losing the production a lot of money. News is also becoming easier to access through rival sites such as Google and YouTube. There are many YouTube channels that offer the news and the number of channels is increasing. YouTube channels can affect the news and media as they can attract viewers from the news/media audience. As the internet has grown,Streaming sites such as Netflix, Blink box, Now-TV and others have made it a lot easier to view films. In the 1900s Films were only viewable if they were shown at theaters, TVs and tapes/DVDs.
Interactive-
Interactive TV is now a common occurrence and is often used for reality TV shows or shows that the viewers must choose the fate of the people on TV. This can appeal to people as the can have control. Interactive TV has slowly increased in popularity, it is now used in shows such as Big Brother, X-Factor and Geordie Shore. You can interact with TV in many different ways however, recently, it has become a lot more advanced. Interactive TV started off by being a Red Button on your TV remote however, interacting with TV is becoming a lot easier as you can now interact with it through a hashtag on twitter or through using the apps which the TV companies have made especially for interaction with the show. Often on certain shows they will read out comments which have either been made on twitter or that have been left through the app.
High Definition-
This has advanced rather quickly over the past 10 years and has increased in quality dramatically. Since the digital switch-over, we have been presented with HD TV. The common size for a standard definition TV would either be 480 x 360 or 858 x 480. Since the digital takeover has progressed we are now able to view TV in sizes such as 1280 x 720 and 1920 x 1080. The highest resolution that is available to the general public is currently 4K, the size of this is 3860 x 2160. This is the highest current size, however 8K is in production although it is not yet available. Cinemas often use 4K as the film quality becomes significantly less when stretched out across a larger screen.
3D-
The first known 3D film was first shown in September 1922 and was called the Power of Love. 3D has become increasingly popular and is available for a wide range of films however it is limited. 3D first started out through using red and cyan glasses to view the film. 3D films are now more commonly viewed through clear transparent glasses with multiple layers. There are very few channels on TV where you are able to watch 3D Films and content.
Types of Viewing-
Pay per view is a rather uncommon but is still a popular way of watching single events. Pay per view is where you pay to view the event once. This is often a big deal and very important for events such as big boxing matches or sport like events. Pay per view is rather outdated and is not used as often as it used to be. Instead of paying once for a show/event, people like to watch TV online on catch up. On demand viewing is another form of viewing content. This is often content that has been on the TV which has been later shown on the internet. It is shown on websites such as BBC iPlayer, ITV Player and Demand 5. These are websites that will show the TV which has been on at an earlier point on the TV channel, and will be available for people to catch up on the shows they have missed. Others such as Netflix do not have a channel however they do offer online streaming. Netflix will offer shows and films which are currently popular. There are also now shows for Netflix which are originally produced or funded by Netflix to be exclusive to their audience. As there are many legal sites for streaming, there are also illegal sites for streaming. These sites will often offer films which may have been pirated or not purchased. This is illegal as this is piracy. This is illegal as the production does not receive the money for the viewing and therefore is stealing. Piracy is often shown on online streaming sites such as Putlocker, 123Movies and Vidlocker. Digital recorders are an older form of viewing, these are often devices such as DVD recorders or other forms of personal video recorders. A DVD recorder is a device where you are able to record digital TV and burn it onto a DVD disc to view whenever. This is an outdated way of viewing as the majority of people often use TV packages and services which allow them to record TV to the box provided without having to use DVDs. This quickly became more popular than DVD recording as DVDs could be damaged any may longer work whereas the recordings were digital and stored in their TV providers box and could not be damaged. This was also convenient as you would be able to store a lot more on the box than on a single DVD and would save the viewer time by not having to constantly change DVD's to find the recording they wanted. After recording through the TV boxes came out, DVD recording became obsolete quickly.
